On February 18, 2014, PWArchitects and Coil Construction appeared in a Columbia Business Times article by Torie Ross regarding their selection by Central Methodist University for a $1 million renovation to the A. Perry Phillips Recreation Center located on the university’s Fayette campus.
“The plan, approved by the CMU Board of Trustees on Friday, Feb. 14, will add around 7,000 square feet of space, upgrade the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and plumbing systems and reconfigure the existing footprint of the facility.
The renovation will also feature a new multipurpose room that can be used for physical education, yoga, and dance classes, a multi-use court adaptable for basketball, volleyball, and other recreational sports, and reconfigured office spaces.
The project, which will begin in March, is set for completion in September. While some spring and summer activities will be impacted during construction, the administration believes the renovation is necessary. “The Board asked us to address the issue of limited recreational opportunities for all students. We believe this project will accomplish that goal…the main purpose and priority (of the project) is student recreation,” Julee Sherman, CMU vice president for finance and administration, said in a statement issued by the university. Sherman says the facility is heavily utilized but is also limited by its existing design.
The current structure, which was originally built in 1981, is 28,000 square feet and is named after the late 1930 alumnus, former board member, and benefactor, A. Perry Phillips. PW Architects, Inc. will spearhead the architectural work for the renovation while Coil Construction will serve as the general contractor.”
