Due to its age and design, the previous Conservation Office did not meet the needs of the Missouri Department of Conservation. The Conservation Department wished to consolidate its two facilities into one to make its Columbia operations more efficient, consolidate research and management, and save money over the long term. Located east of Fr. Tolton Catholic High School, the new Conservation Office (Central Regional Office and Conservation Research Center) was constructed on city-owned property south of Gans Road.
The Conservation Ofice project incorporates a 1/3 mile discovery trail through the site that includes learning stations that inform the user about the design practices utilized for stormwater conservation, general conservation practices, and other natural features of the site.
