The Locust Street Elementary Addition project involves a 2-story 20,000 SF addition and renovations to a 100-year-old urban elementary school on a downtown lot that is small and challenging. The addition is meant to replace classroom trailers, provide a secured and safe entry and exit for the school facility, and replace the small kitchen. The project will also free up the multipurpose aspect of the Gym/Café/Assembly space so the Gym can function solely as a gym. The new cafeteria will serve as a storm shelter and a separate dedicated black box theatre to support the performing arts mission of this specific elementary school.
The renovations to the interior of the existing building are primarily focused on expanding the usefulness of the older portions of the building to maximize usage and provide the latest technology and electrical options. Installing a new elevator made the existing and new buildings accessible. The exterior aspects of the project include providing more parking, safer drop-off, pick-up paths, and updated all-weather outdoor play areas to maximize the limited amount of exterior space on the very tight site.
