Excerpt from article in Columbia Missourian: “A new early childhood learning center for children in the Columbia Public School District is set to break ground on Sept. 28. The center will be for children from birth to 5 years old. The center will occupy 54,000 square feet in northern Columbia on the property of Lange Middle School, 2201 Smiley Lane, according to information on the district’s website. The goal is to start classes in the fall of 2017, district spokeswoman Michelle Baumstark said.
The school will be home to a Title I preschool, an early childhood learning center for special education students with high needs and the Parents as Teachers office, Baumstark said. The district has a waiting list for early childhood students, and Baumstark said that is not expected to change in coming years. The center will have 17 classrooms: 10 for the preschool and the remaining for the early childhood special education classes, she said. Spaces will be designated for physical and occupational therapy, educational and health screenings and speech therapy. The plan also includes a playground.” Read more
