Church Planning & Design

Churches, synagogues, and temples are built in response to our religious beliefs. They are a place of inspiration, prayer, and refuge. PWA has developed a process for working with religious groups and church planning building committees so that all views, expectations, and needs can be heard from both the Owner and Architect. This results in a shared vision based on a firm understanding of the costs and opportunities available.

Civic and Government Facilities

PWA has broad experience working with civic and government agencies at every level. For nearly three decades our firm has offered cost-effective design solutions that are sensitive to the needs of elected officials who hold the public’s trust. The government facilities we have completed have included studies, master plans, new buildings, and numerous renovations of buildings in Missouri and surrounding states.

Commercial buildings like banks, bars, restaurants, and stores all benefit from good design.  Even though technology has enabled us to do business directly out of the home with mail order, fax machines, the internet, and telemarketing, it is important to have a facility that is inviting to customers and clients. When it comes to good commercial projects, PWA can help you design a facility that is inviting to customers, more efficient for employees, and a vital presence in your community.

School Facilities Planning & Design

School facilities must be adaptable to new technologies, flexible for innovative learning strategies, and responsive to academic and extracurricular activities. PWA can help you explore innovative educational facility design with programs, facilities, and systems that make your learning environments successful.

The design of school facilities are an investment in your student’s future:

  • Flexible and Dynamic Studio Learning Environments
  • Technology/Teleconferencing Resource Centers
  • Science Discovery Centers for Small Group Learning
  • State-of-Art Athletic Facilities
  • Outdoor Classrooms for Hands-on-Learning
  • Designs for Safety and Security
  • Sustainable Learning
  • Environments that require less energy usage, conserve water, minimize waste, and improve the learning experience for building users and visitors.

Health Care Facilities

Healthcare facilities must be prepared for both long-range and immediate plans. The days of luxurious time-lines are gone and if existing facilities are being renovated, they will often need to remain operational throughout construction. PWA can help you manage the logistical challenges that come with growth and changes in practice areas. Together, we can address your immediate needs for facilities, space, and changes in technology.

Industrial Facilities

Industrial manufacturing and storage are a major component of American business. The careful and cost-effective design of these industrial facilities, including manufacturing plants, makes a real difference on the bottom line. PWA has designed facilities up to 200,000 square feet in size, many of which have included the most sophisticated equipment and variety of materials. These industrial facilities are always designed with an understanding of OSHA and other safety regulations. The result is efficient, modern facilities that meet the expanding needs of our clients.

Office Planning & Design

Many people spend more of their waking hours in the office than at home. Good office design can make this time an enriching, even enjoyable, experience. With the speed of technological change common in today’s industries, work should be fun and the workplace pleasant.

Working together, office design can:

  • Increase the value of your property
  • Maximize the productivity of your staff
  • Improve the efficiency of your workplace
  • Reduce the environmental impact of your building.

From business efficiency to ADA accessibility to advanced telecommunications to custom furnishings and finishes, PWA will design your office facility to meet your requirements in an enriching setting.

Parks and Recreation

For over three decades PWA has worked with state and local agencies to address these issues and has provided design solutions that work to:

  • Preserve both our natural and cultural heritage.
  • Educate our communities about our environment and how to preserve it.
  • Provide innovative avenues for recreation.

While each project is unique, the knowledge and experience gained from our previous projects allow us to accommodate and even anticipate the needs of our clients.

Public Safety Facilities

Public safety facilities and fire stations and have grown into a specialty for PWA over the past 25 years. In working primarily with the Boone County Fire Protection District, the City of Columbia, Southern Boone County Fire Protection District, Holts Summit Fire Protection District, and the City of Boonville, PWA has developed a sense of what makes emergency service facilities work.

Public Safety Facilities should be:

  • Functional
  • Durable, with minimal maintenance
  • Easy to use
  • The right size for the job
  • The right size for the future
  • Expandable
  • Flexible

Additionally, public safety facilities should be aesthetically pleasing. They should adhere to the basic elements of architectural design, for example, harmony, balance and rhythm, and respect and blend in with the surrounding environment, including the neighborhood in which the station is located.

Renovation and Restoration

Architecture that has stood the test of time is worth preserving. PWA has been honored to work on the renovation and restoration of many historic structures in mid-Missouri. The Rolla Building – Missouri University of Science & Technology’s oldest building and the Residence on the Francis Quadrangle at the University of Missouri both date from the mid-1800s. As well as being on the National Register of Historic Places, they are a reminder of our history and beliefs. Renovation of these historic buildings required a delicate balance between historic character and modern convenience.

Often buildings can lose their functionality over time due to deterioration or changes in ownership and purpose. The renovation and restoration of these buildings can be a great way to capitalize on an existing location, but they can come with a fair amount of challenges. They require a thorough analysis and understanding of a multitude of criteria prior to determining the most appropriate design solution. With the knowledge and experience gained from similar projects, the PWA team is able to identify and define issues that may impact the overall outcome of a project. We understand the critical importance and value of verifying existing conditions. We acknowledge that even great designs based on inaccurate foundations can lead to failure. Working closely with clients, we wade through the challenges and opportunities to arrive at creative, functional and cost-effective design solutions.

Multi-family Residential

Multi-family residential housing is an investment for the owner. It is a home for the resident and a part of the public realm of any community or campus. There are many reasons for multi-family housing. These include cost savings, energy efficiency, less maintenance, short-term living quarters, more efficient land use, and convenience to work or school. In every case, there is an advantage to good design and sound construction.

Sports Facilities

The Sports and Recreation Facilities designed by PWA show a keen understanding of the important connection between mind and body. Our firm understanding of the rules and regulations of a variety of sports facilities has helped us guide athletic departments and other clients through the planning and design process.

Types of Sports Facilities:

  • Aquatic facilities
  • Athletic complexes
  • Baseball stadiums
  • Football stadiums
  • Gymnasiums
  • Locker rooms
  • Master planning

LEED is a voluntary program that helps to benchmark the performance of environmental architecture. Our LEED accredited architects can apply a broad range of sustainable design strategies to increase the value, productivity, efficiency, and reduce the environmental impact of architecture through design.

Design Phase Projects

Generally, the projects listed on this Design Phase page are in the design or construction documents phases. When a project goes into the bidding phase information about the project will be placed on our Project Planroom page.

Under Construction

Ultimately seeing a project under construction is the most exciting part of the design process.  Projects begin to emerge from all the meetings, discussions, and design work and take their final form. The projects on this page, designed by PWArchitects, are currently under construction:
