Southwest Middle School – Columbia Public Schools

Design Considerations:

  • The objective of the project is to provide the district with a new middle school to accommodate 700 students (anticipated in the next 20 years) to address continued community growth.
  • A grade-level team concept is the basis of the core classroom portion of the new middle school design with separate areas for 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.
  • The two-story classroom wing incorporates flexible team building and collaborative alcoves for project work.
  • The media center and front office zone is centrally located and acts as the hub for the building and buffer from the high volume and more active spaces of the building like the gym and performing arts.
  • Vocal and instrumental music rooms, the cafeteria, and gymnasium are separated from the academic zone with a large central corridor, which improves sound isolation and enhances student and event circulation.
  • The building is subdivided to increase security in the academic communities and to accommodate after-hour community use.
  • Strong emphasis was placed on technology, allowing for state of the art delivery of the curriculum in all spaces and supporting the districts 1 to 1 device policy for students.
  • Security is critical to the design, and so access to instructional areas will be secured during public use of the building.
  • The design team is creating a vibrant atmosphere with the use of color, texture, natural lighting, varying volumes of space, and acoustical treatments.
  • The exterior of the building is highlighted by the use of multiple colors and sizes of masonry and metal panels.
  • The site allows for the bus loading area to be separate from automobile loading and parking to provide another layer of user safety.
